This year's famine was a bit different from the usual. Our teens participated in it with renewed enthusiasm, and with the determination of making it all the way. They abstained from food (they were allowed to drink) and set aside the money they would have spent to purchase food for that day and donated it to an emergency shelter in Pawtucket, to feed those who are in need in our neighborhood. In addition to having services together, the teens participated in discussions, games, videos and other educational activities. Sponsor's donations were collected to support World Vision's efforts in third world countries and totaled in excess of 1,600 dollars. Below are some comments from the participants.
From Keri:
I have been participating in the 30-hour Famine for four years now, and I honestly feel that this year has been the most impacting and enjoyable one so far. Not only was this year's turnout the most successful, but it was also educational as well. The volunteers from the soup kitchen and a shelter for the homeless that came to talk to us were extremely helpful in heightening our awareness as to how many people are in need of homes and food. We learned that unfortunately, more children go without food and homes than anyone else, and there are more people in need than we realize. We kept our minds off our hunger by playing games, having group discussions and bible studies. Everyone prayed for those in need and thanked God for our opportunity to make a difference. We also donated the money we would have used for food, to the homeless shelter who visited us. God blessed our weekend and we had a wonderful time. It was truly a memorable experience.
From Naomi:
In response to the 30 Hour Famine, I must say that I learned a great deal about the blessings we have in this country and take for granted. I was surprised at how well the younger participants took the fast. I was impressed with the thought that many of them put into the issue of world hunger. They were well mannered, and committed to the cause. They kept my spirits up when they wanted to fall. It was great to hear the young adults say how they could, and do, make a difference. My hat is off to Luciano and Sue, and the work they put into making this a successful event. Kim kept things fun and on an even keel. Everyone looked up to her. In conclusion, I look forward to the coming year and helping the young adults in their efforts to make a difference in their community and the world.
Come and join us next year! It will be a memorable experience.
